What the heck is Kuopio?

If You visit to East Finland, You may wonder about the names of places. Almost all of them mean something. So if You travel in Savo or Karelia, here are some translations of names for You.

1. Vieremä = Landslide

2. Jyrkkä = Radical

3. Valtimo =  Artery

4. Iisalmi = E-strait. Would be cool if the name is Iilahti = E-bay in English

5. Koirakoski = Dog rapids

6. Pajukoski = Willow rapids

7. Ronkeli = Picky

8. Kiljuva = Screaming

9. Matovaara = Wormdanger

10. Rautavaara = Irondanger

11. Lapinlahti = Laplands Bay

12. Varpaisjärvi = On tiptoe Lake

13. Pajulahti = Willowbay

14. Saunalahti = Saunabay

15. Siilinjärvi = Hedgehogs Lake

There's a little village near Siilinjärvi called Pöljä = Idiot in English. True story.

16. Juankoski = Juan rapids. Named after Juan Carlos the King of Spain. Just kidding...

2. Kesälahti = Summerbay

3. Haukivuori = Pike mountain

4. Rantasalmi = Beachstrait

5. Enonkoski = Uncles rapids

6. Savonranta = Savo Beach

7. Kangaslampi = Fabric pond

8. Varkaus = Stealing. According to the law it should be located between the pilfering and robbery.

9. Pieksämäki = Knock about Hill

10. Sorsakoski = Duck rapids

11. Leppävirta = Alder stream

12. Heinävesi = Haywater

13. Liperi = Lovage

14. Jerusalemi = Jerusalem. Yes, it's here.

15. Joensuu = Rivers mouth

16. Rautalampi = Ironpond

17. Suonenjoki = Veinriver

18. Outokumpu = Strange Knoll. It also means a big stomach: Oh my, You have an Outokumpu!
